Web3 live streaming over BitTorrent

Sunday, November 27, 2022

We've been hard at work increasing our feature set. Today we're proud to announce that we've launched livestreaming over the BitTorrent protocol.

How to get started

To get started with live streaming, first, you'll also need to configure your username, stream title, and stream description from your account settings page.

Next, you'll need to install the Madlad.tv Media Server. Unlike traditional streaming platforms, we don't allow streaming to our servers, but rather you stream to the media server running on your own device.

Once your server is up and running, you can start streaming to it by configuring your streaming software to stream to:

rtmp://localhost:1935/live

We do this to enable distribution of your stream via a decentralized protocol. Each viewer will download and share your stream with each other viewer.

Perks of web3 streaming

Decentralized streaming allows us to operate with greatly reduced bandwidth and storage costs. Reduced costs on our side will eventually mean increased revenue for content creators. Traditional platforms like Youtube and Twitch only share ~45% of ad revenue with creators, in part due to high infrastructure costs.

We're still very early in our live streaming development, but eventually each streamer on our platform will be able to make choices about how to store and distribute their content to viewers.
